Founded to train inventors, not only coders

In 2004, satellite-software engineer Dr. Meera Raghunathan and cryptography researcher Prof. Arjun Deshpande opened a 12-classroom building on the edge of Electronics City with 60 students and nine faculty members.

Their argument was simple: India's IT boom was producing excellent programmers, but too few people who create new technology. With a grant from the Karnataka Knowledge Mission and a gift from the Venkatesh Family Trust, they built a school where every student does research, spends time in industry and studies abroad before graduating.

Within a decade, SIAC alumni had founded three unicorn companies, led a national cybersecurity task force and published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers. Today SIAC ranks among Asia's ten best young technology institutes in the Asia TechEd Index 2026.

  1. SIAC opens in Electronics City with 60 students and 9 faculty.

  2. A decade on: 3 unicorn founders and over 400 published papers.

  3. The 52-acre, solar-powered, zero-waste Kaveri Campus opens with the Aryabhata-X supercomputer.

  4. 2,800 students from 41 countries; top ten in the Asia TechEd Index.
